Kreon Alternative FW for the Samsung SH-D162C drive v0.8
>> Kreon released a new version of his firmware for the Samsung SH-D162C PC DVD-drive. This modified firmware allows you to dump original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs with the cheap SH-D162 PC DVD drive (no Xbox(360)-drive or disc hot-swap required). This new version comes support for full Security Sector (SS) extraction!
XBOX 360 enabled alternative FW for the Samsung SH-D162C drive - V0.80
Here it is... the first all in one PC DVD-ROM drive with full XBOX360 backup capabilities. Full image and SS extraction functions have been implemented in this release, while still maintaining all the basic functions of the DVD-ROM drive.
Why not V1.00? Well... I'm still working on hardware correct timing of response types 5 & 7, which ultimately is the right way to do this. Studying a large amount of security sectors has shown however, that all (to my knowledge!) current games uses the same timing scheme, which makes faked timing possible. This release makes use of faked timing, and will use fixed values for all timed values. A 'jitter'function has been added that will make the fixed values vary sligthly, effectively making any attempt by M$ to detect a specific timer pattern for copied games impossible.
So, will this work with all games? Yes... I believe it will with all existing games, but that might ofcourse change for future releases. Always keep that in mind when backing up games, and always test the first backup made before making more backups of the same game.
Should problems occur and you believe it to be caused by incorrect extraction of the SS, feel free to contact me at: kreon.inside@gmail.com But...before doing so, a little extra effort from your side is needed Smiley In order to fix any bugs, i need to know what game you're working with, and I need a copy of the failing SS as well as a copy of a working SS extracted from a TS-H943 or a GDR-3120L. If you're unable to supply me with a working SS, I can not guarantee any kind of help, as it is very unlikely that I can get my hands on the same exact release of a given game.
This is what you get: * Full challenge/response functionality. * Two types of unlock for XBOX 360 game discs. One for making xtreme style images and one for making wxripper style images. Both types of iso can be made using isobuster. Ripping using wxripper isn't supported for the time being * A 'lock' function that will cancel any enabled unlock state. This can be very useful for custom applications. * 'Error skipping' which basically speeds up the error handling of the drive. A complete wxripper style image (including video) can be obtained in 15-16 minutes, when error skipping is enabled. Getting through the critical area of LBA 19408-20479 will take you more than 20 minutes alone, if error skipping is disabled Sad * A much more streamlined command interface which is good news if you intend to write an application that makes use of the drives extra features. * The drive will default to unlock state 2 and error skip enabled when a 360 media is inserted. You can in other words use isobuster to obtain a wxripper style image without issuing any commands to the drive Smiley * RPC1 support (RPC-2 actually but with automatic change of drive region and RCE support)
This is what you'll have to wait for.. * Hardware correct timing for response types 5 & 7.
Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive to cost 199GBP (370USD)
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
The Premium Xbox 360 won't benefit from a price cut this Christmas - but instead a HD-DVD and console package is due, spearheading a marketing drive of console bundles available from November.
Retail sources have indicated to GamesIndustry.biz that Microsoft is currently planning to price the standalone HD-DVD drive at GBP 199 (~293EUR or ~370USD), and to package it with two HD-DVD movies. The sources also suggested that Microsoft will bundle the Premium console and next-generation movie player together for under GBP 400 (~589EUR, ~745USD) - and that the price could even be as low as GBP 375 (~552EUR, ~700USD).
It's expected an official Premium bundle will be made available in early November, with a newly released triple-A third-party title included.
Note: I added an USD pricepoint to the article above, but I just converted the currency. The actual prices will probably be lower in USA (due lower saletaxes etc). To give you an idea, the Xbox 360 Pro Pack sells at 399eur (converted that's ~505usd ... so over 100usd more than the official 399usd pricepoint in the USA). So the actual retail price of the HD-DVD addon in North-America will probably be closer to 300USD. Read More: gamesindustry.biz

Windows Media Player 11 Won't Stream Video to Xbox 360
>> We already talked about this earlier this week, but today the guys over at arstechnica.com managed to contact Microsoft - Windows Media Player 11 will not allow video streaming:
I decided to fact check it and drop Microsoft a line. The bad news is that it was an error on their part. While WMP does support Windows Media Connect for pictures and music, video is not supported.
Read More: arstechnica.com
In meantime Microsoft also updated their WMP 11b2 website:
The new Media Sharing feature of Windows Media Player 11 lets you enjoy the contents of your Windows Media Player library from anywhere in your home. If you have a home network (wired or wireless), you can use Windows Media Player 11 to stream the contents of your library to networked devices. For example, if you have an Xbox 360 or other digital media receiver (DMR), you can use Windows Media Player to stream music and pictures from your computer to that device. This even works with music that you've downloaded from PlaysForSure music stores and services.
Microsoft Japan to launch Core Xbox *Updated*
>> There was already a rumor yesterday and it's now confirmed (by reuters, not by MS yet), Microsoft will launch the Core Pack in Japan too. From reuters.co.uk:
Microsoft Corp. plans to release a cheaper version of its Xbox 360 video game console in Japan this autumn to boost sluggish sales in Japan and better compete with rivals Sony Corp. and Nintendo Co. Ltd., a newspaper said on Friday. Business daily Nihon Keizai said Microsoft plans to launch a simpler version that lacks a hard disk drive and other accessories on November 2 for 29,800 yen (~250USD, ~200EUR or ~137GBP), about 10,000 yen less than its standard version.
Xbox 360 sales in Japan reached 158,654 units as of early this month, while 5 million units had been sold worldwide by the end of June, the paper said, quoting data from game marketing firm Enterbrain Inc.
!Update! Microsoft now also confirmed the story including the free PGR3 and N3 mentioned in the original rumor:
The package will, however, be bundled with two Xbox 360 games, Bizarre Creations' Project Gotham Racing 3 and Q/Phantagram's Ninety-Nine Nights, making it compelling value for money for Japanese consumers intrigued by the console, given that each game currently retails for close to 7,000 yen ($60). Xbox 360 HD-DVD Shown at IFA2006
>> Microsoft displayed the Xbox360 HD-DVD addon at the IFA2006 consumer electronics trade fair. From ifa2006.net and hexus.net:
Now, normally, the partners who supply components for the Xbox 360 keep a fairly low profile but it seems that Toshiba is happy (and has been given permission) to let everyone know that it's making this add-on for the Xbox 360, which is why it was proudly displaying the drive on its own stand.
The Xbox 360 HD DVD external drive is roughly the same size as four stacked DVD boxes or one Nintendo Wii console. The outer casing is styled by Microsoft to match the Xbox 360 - what Toshiba does is supply the HD DVD drive inside. Round the back there's a separate DC input for an external power supply, plus three USB ports - two standard size, one mini. The drive connects to an Xbox 360 using one of those ports but, right now, though, we don't know which one.
Video showing the HDDVD external drive for the XboX 360, and some other HDDVD players that Toshiba is launching. The Toshiba 1.8" and 2.5" hard disk drives are also shown.
Euro PlayStation 3 Launch Delayed
>> From bbc.co.uk/gamesindustry.biz:
The launch of Sony's long-awaited PlayStation 3 games console in Europe has been delayed until March 2007. Ken Kutaragi, head of Sony's global computer entertainment division, said the machine would still be launched in November in the US and in Japan.
Mr Kutaragi blamed the European delay on problems in mass producing elements of the high-definition Blu-ray disc drives in the machines. Sony said it still aimed to ship six million new PlayStations by March. But it halved its forecast for the end of 2006, saying just two million units would be shipped worldwide before the end of December.
Xbox UK boss Neil Thompson has told GamesIndustry.biz that Microsoft is not surprised Sony has "backed away" from its commitment to a global launch for PlayStation 3. "We know how challenging it is to pull off a global launch, so it's not surprising that Sony has backed away from their previously announced launch plan, due to the unproven technology they are trying to pack in to their console," he said. He concluded, "These factors will help us reach our goal of 10 million consoles sold worldwide by the end of the year."
Xbox360 SS Merger v1.7
>> HellDoc informed us he released a new version of Xbox360 SS Merger(info) - a GUI tool that allows you to easily insert the Security Sectors (SS) on Xbox360 and Xbox1 images. This new version comes with support to create stealth media Xtreme v3.0+ images (insert PFI/DMI), create NME-360 compatible images and more:
Here the long awaited XBOX SS Merger 1.7 Sorry for the delay, I moved, screen blew up, hd screwed up... But finally.
The NME-360 features have been tested by the NME Team. SS Convertion for NME has been coded from ground... this was some pretty hard stuff.
I didn't try the Xtreme 3.x stuff too, as I have a Hitachi drive.
I changed the way ISO type autodetection worked. It now work on the filesize. I burned lots of backup made in different way and they were all successfully detected.
If you like the software, don't forget to donate at helldoc AT gmail d0t com. You can also send me feedbacks, comments, suggestions, bug report but please don't tell me that you downloaded a scene release and you can't get it to work, I won't answer.
No Microsoft Xbox 360 HDMI Cable
>> From joystiq.com:
A newly discovered Gamestop and EB Games listing reveals an Xbox 360 HDMI cable, a rather ponderous product considering the fact that the console does not have the necessary port to accomodate such a miraculous transmissive device. Is it an expensive adapter that automagically goes from the bulky 360 AV connector to an HDMI output? Feel free to entertain such a possibility, so long as you remember that Microsoft wants nothing to do with it. After constantly pestering them for a comment, they informed us that the product was not one of theirs and that "Microsoft has not announced any additional support beyond component video for HD output. MS is watching the market closely and they will continue to evaluate any options in the face of consumer demand."
Stream Video from XP to Xbox 360 with WMP 11? (not yet, maybe this fall)
>> Windows Media Player 11 beta2 is now available and this is what the Microsoft PR writes as one of the new features: "If you have a home network (wired or wireless), you can use Windows Media Player 11 to stream the contents of your library to networked devices. For example, if you have an Xbox 360 or other digital media receiver (DMR), you can use Windows Media Player to stream music, pictures, and videos from your computer to that device."
Sounds great ... will Microsoft finally allow us to stream movies from a normal Windows XP machine and stop forcing Media Center PC on us? Well ... right now it doesn't work. WMP 11 beta2 does have Windows Media Connect built in, which allows to stream pictures and music to your Xbox 360, but video is still a no-go.
Some sites suggest there will be an Xbox 360 dashboard update (the big fall 06 update maybe?) to allow streaming videos from WMP 11, but right now there's no official confirmation from Microsoft about this.

WMS Runs Hot for Xbox 360, Cold on PS3
>> From next-gen.biz:
WMS is predicting monthly sales of 250,000 units of Xbox 360 in August and September, up to 400,000 units in October, and between 750,000 - 1.25 million units monthly in November and December. Meanwhile, the firm has downgraded its predictions for PS3 sales from 3 million to 2.3 million.
In a posting today, the analyst also added that "sell through of Xbox 360 hardware could be higher if the supply situation for the PS3 falls well short of demand, with many holiday gift givers likely substituting purchases of the 360 in place of the PS3". Through July, NPD data shows that Xbox 360 hardware sales in the U.S. were 2.2 million units. By WMS stats, the installed base should be clear of 5 million by the end of the year.
Team Underdog: NME-360 v1.1 Released *Update2*
>> From Team Underdog:
With a small delay we are now happy to announce the release of the NME-360 v1.1 Chip as of today. A few resellers have their chips already, others are getting them in within the next 2 days. We are just setting up the new installation diagrams which are going to be online tomorrow. Please note: The NME-360 v1.1 chips are still two different chips for samsung and hitachi. This time we marked the Hitachi Chips with a white stripe. The Samsung Chips are unmarked. Furthermore we'll shoot a small video showing the cool activity LED feature at work. Even though the installation and burning process are now much easier with the NME-360 v1.1 and our aSSociat0r tool, we will set up a support-forum for those who still have problems. That way we can keep email-support lower which gives us more time for realizing out future plans ;-) Anyway, with the new NME-360 v1.1 Chip life got so much easier for everybody and especially for those who bought a Pioneer 111D burner when all that progress started.
!Update! Gamefreax.de some more details of the NME-360 v1.1. I'm not gonna translate the whole txt but just gonna point out a few things: * this new v1.1 chip with also work wih the Toshiba-Samsung MS-28 and the Hitachi-LG with FW v59 * Activity LED feature: if you use a retail disc, the chip will be disabled and the front panel leds will act completely normally, if you boot a backup the chip will be enabled and the power-led will go out. * The chip can also disable the network interface when booting from backup (Xbox LIVE ban protection if Microsoft ever choses to run checks). You'll have to chose if you want this feature when you install the chip.
!UPDATE2! I made a small mistake during translation ... it's not when you order the chip that you'll have to chose if want the "network off" feature, but during installation (extra optional wire).
Official Site: http://www.team-underdog.com Expected Retail Price: ~40EUR

Microsoft Plans X360 Media Briefing on September 20th
>> From uk.xbox360.ign.com:
We're sure you already have late September marked up on your gaming event/trade show calendar for the Tokyo Game Show. Well make some room for Microsoft!
The Xbox 360 will get some time to call its own just prior to the start of the show. Microsoft will gather members of the press in the early afternoon on Wednesday 9/20 at a hotel in Tokyo to deliver its Xbox 360 message prior to TGS's official opening on Friday, 9/22. This news shouldn't come as a surprise, as Microsoft always holds a pre-TGS briefing for the media. Last year, the company summoned the press on the Thursday before the start of the show. This year, the press conference is being held on the Wednesday prior to the start of the show.
>> Joystiq posted a nice review of the Xbox Live Vision camera:
A small, plain box arrived unexpectedly from Redmond over the weekend containing nothing more than the diminutive Xbox Live Vision camera floating in a sea of amniotic packing paper. No retail box here, just the tiny little camera and its accompanying PR fact sheet ("Microsoft Corp.'s line of Xbox 360 Authentic Products continues to grow while ..."). The sheet does detail the two bundles that will be released on August 19th.
We hurriedly grabbed some snaps before hooking up the Vision to the ol' 360 and taking it for a spin around the UNO block ... where IT happened. We've grown (abnormally) accustomed to the sort of blue language one finds while playing outside of the confines of your Xbox Live friends list -- this is of course, entirely different than the blue language you enjoy while playing with your friends, but we digress -- but it wasn't ten minutes before we had our first PG-13 exposure. Read on for the entire, sordid tale (with NSFW pictures!).
